    Good morning Family Law Section members,

    On Thursday, Dec. 17, NJICLE will present Webcast- The Undocumented Lawyer An Insiders Perspective to Immigration, Asylum and Civil Rights from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

    The Undocumented Lawyer is a forthcoming HBO documentary that has been called "relevant" and an "extremely necessary documentary." It is essential viewing for anyone who wants to dig deeper and understand immigration, citizenship, and law in our current society.



    Take part in a special seminar that will include a viewing of The Undocumented Lawyer, which focuses on Lizbeth Mateo. She is an attorney who swore to uphold the Constitution. She's also undocumented.

    Since crossing the border at age 14, Lizbeth hasn't let her immigration status hold her back. Frustrated by an unjust system, she's drawing from her own experiences to fight for immigrant rights in the streets and in the courts.

    Her latest client is Edith Espinal, a woman avoiding deportation by taking sanctuary in a church. As the months turn to years, Lizbeth is running out of legal options to help. Lizbeth returns to her activist roots and teaches Edith to fight back-because sometimes you need to ignore the law in order to change it.

    First, we will watch the 19-minute movie together, virtually. Then, stay logged in for the virtual seminar and to take part in a session that includes a Q-and-A with Mateo about her life and journey, as well as a robust discussion with top New Jersey immigration attorneys about some of the issues raised in the film and those facing people living in the Garden State.

    Attendees will learn about the latest developments and issues in asylum; sanctuary, perceptions of immigrants and the interplay of law and status.



    CLE Credits:
    NJ CLE information: This program has been approved by the Board on Continuing Legal Education of the Supreme Court of New Jersey for 3.0 hours of total CLE credit
    NJ CLE: This program has been approved for 3.0 credits (50 minute hour)
    PA CLE: 2.5 substantive credits pending ($12 fee – separate check payable to NJICLE must be submitted at the end of the program)
    NY CLE (t&nt): 3.0 professional practice credits

    The tuition for NJSBA members is $149. The general tuition is $179.
