    Hello Family Law Section members,

On Tuesday, April 14, NJICLE will present Webcast- Relationships and the Law: Spotting & Avoiding Trouble Before it Finds You from 9 a.m. to 12:35 p.m.

Relationships can lead consequences - especially for lawyers.

We live in a world built on relationships (both good and bad), and from friends to colleagues, adversaries to judges, and clients to strangers or members of the general public, we form unique bonds based on the circumstances surrounding the relationships we have. While we usually communicate effortlessly without needing to be overly guarded or a great deal of thought, every interaction we have, every relationship we forge, and every communication we engage in is governed by the Rules of Professional Conduct. Each relationship matters to the RPCs.

Don't Get Caught By The Unexpected
This brand-new, thought-provoking ethics program will provide you with the roadmap you need to successfully identify and navigate the "landmines" most common (and often unexpected) issues that emerge surrounding relationships of all kinds. Our expert panel will identify a few common relationship issues (conflicts of interest, ex-parte communication, romantic relationships with clients, etc.) as well as not-so-obvious relationship issues like taking a business interest in a client's company or establishing an attorney/client relationship when you thought you were only giving someone informal, friendly advice. You'll also get advice concerning social media, and how certain benign seeming relationships and posts can lead to big trouble.

This practical professionalism seminar is presented by seasoned attorneys with years of experience as professionals with the Office of Attorney Ethics, members of ethics committees, and attorneys who defend lawyers accused of ethics violations. Register today.

    • Latest case law related to relationships and ethics
    • Specific situations – obvious situations to avoid and to prevent yourself from unwittingly crossing the line.
    • The attorney/client relationship – how and when is it established and when does informal advice become legal advice? What are your obligations when that happens?

It is disappointing that the Bar Association is charging for CLE programs-especially a program dealing with Ethics.  I assumed that the Bar would understand the severe economic pressure on many family lawyers at this time.

They are a business and out to make business just like the rest of us.  They have employees to pay and mouths to feed.   Perhaps they are doing it at a reduced rate?  I would assume if anyone had a financial issue they would consider a reduced rate? That is a fair question to ask. In any event I think they I'm trying to put programs together so people can get credits that they need or just to stay busy.  Shaming causes derision and at this time we need unity and compassion.  My five cents cuz I gave myself a raise from two.   Stay safe.
