Good afternoon Family Law Section members,

On Wednesday, July 8, NJICLE in cooperation with Reel Time Creative Learning Experiences will present Webcast - Nobody Told Me There'd Be Days Like These - Stress, Ethics and the Practice of Law from 12 to 3 p.m.

Spring and summer of 2020 can be summarized in one word – stressful. Lawyers were already stressed even without the additional pressures that we have been facing in the last few months. We work in an adversarial system with demanding schedules and heavy workloads. Now we are navigating a global pandemic and learning to work from home, and stress levels for many of us are now “off the charts.” While we all know that stress can lead to physical ailments, it can also lead to another problem for lawyers – ethics violations.

Most ethical miscues, professional responsibility breaches, and malpractice claims don't arise out of arcane, ambiguous, provisions of the applicable rules of professional conduct, but, in fact, for clear breaches of obvious, well-defined obligations. It’s not rocket science—in fact, anyone who has sat in on a basic professional responsibility class or ethics CLE would know such conduct is ethically problematic. And yet it happens – and it often happens because of stress that attorneys find unbearable.

Join ethics professionals, mindfulness experts, and seasoned attorneys for an engaging, highly interactive program that provides a fresh and practical perspective on the fundamental question, “Why do ‘good’ people ‘go bad’ and how can we avoid succumbing to pressure?” Based on an original short film written and co-produced by Michael Kahn and Chris Osborn from Reel Time Creative Learning Experiences, this interactive workshop provides a lively way to explore the intersection of ethical decision-making and the manifold sources of stress encountered in our practices and our lives.

Nobody told any of us there’d be days like these. This program will provide a practical approach to handling extraordinary stress, strengthening our resilience, and staying on the ethical side of our obligations during these burdensome times.
