Many attorneys have the opportunity to join nonprofit boards throughout their careers. For anyone, this can be a very rewarding experience, bring opportunities to improve one’s skills, make valuable connections, and help a cause that is personally meaningful. Attorneys also have skill sets and experience that can be very useful to a board. For example, a litigator may be able to clarify an idea or course of action before a vote in a way that allows the board members to fully understand an issue and take a position. An attorney who deals with disputing parties may offer valuable insight into how to bring different factions together to reach a consensus for the good of an organization. However, unless attorneys have experience working with nonprofit boards, they may not understand board basics - how a board functions and what responsibilities are part of board membership.

Join attorneys who have experience both representing nonprofits and tax-exempt organizations and serving on nonprofit boards as they explore the role of a nonprofit board member and the laws governing nonprofits. They will provide training on the basics of nonprofit board service and review common charitable issues from a state and federal perspective.
