Volunteer Lawyers Needed for Union City Law Day

Based on the success of our last three events prior to COVID, we are about to launch our fourth Union City Law Day on Wednesday, June 14 in the evening at Union City High School.  The event is held in conjunction with Senator and Union City Mayor Brian Stack, the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey, the Hudson County Bar Association and the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office.  A flyer promoting the program is attached.

Upwards of 95% of the residents of Union City are Spanish-speaking and many are not fluent in English.  We need bilingual, Spanish-speaking attorneys to provide assistance in the following areas of law:  Immigration, Guardianship for Children, Landlord-Tenant, Divorce, Domestic Violence Restraining Orders, Criminal Law/Expungements and Criminal Law/Victim’s Rights.  For those who are not bilingual, we will have interpreters available, so please do not hesitate to volunteer.

The main part of the program is in the school gymnasium where the participants will have the opportunity to speak to a lawyer one-on-one.  Many of the attorney volunteers bring business cards, as attendees will often follow-up after the program for direct representation.

Please contact NJSBA Executive Director Angela Scheck at [email protected] if you are able to participate in the June 14 program, and, if so, please indicate what legal topic you can cover.  Please also feel free to forward this email to anyone you know who may be interested.
