    Hello Family Law Section members,

NJICLE, the New Jersey State Bar Foundation and the NJSBA Senior Lawyers Committee are presenting a seminar that turns back the clock to ponder what the United States would be like without the Supreme Court’s power of judicial review. Meet President Thomas Jefferson and Chief Justice John Marshall at the crux of this pivotal debate in our country’s history.

Thomas Jefferson and John Marshall: Interpreting the Constitution will be held from 9 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. on Dec. 27 at The Mansion in Voorhees, Dec. 28 at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick and Dec. 29 at the Hilton Meadowland, East Rutherford.

President Thomas Jefferson and Chief Justice John Marshall had much in common, but radically different views of the Constitution and the role the federal government should play in the lives of its citizens. Marshall, a federalist, favored a broad interpretation of the constitution, and saw the government as the keystone and fortress of national well-being, it’s powers coming from the implied consent of the governed. Jefferson, a populist and republican, favored restraint in constitutional interpretation, believed in the power of the masses, favored limited government (especially a limited federal government), and saw value in the occasional revolution.
