    Hello Family Law Section and Criminal Law Section members,

    The New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal is presenting a program for ALL ATTORNEYSThe Unwritten Rules of Client Representation: The Impact of Cultural Customs, Religion, Cross-Border & Foreign Legal Systems & Foreign Laws on Our Courts on Saturday, March 29 from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick.

    With 5 major airports nearby and one of the most culturally diverse populations in the country, New Jersey has truly become a global melting pot. As a successful attorney, it is essential that you fully understand the intersection of state law, international law and your client's expectations.

    This practical seminar is the same program Judge Sohail Mohammed presented to the judiciary at the New Jersey Judicial College. It will go beyond the basic law by examining the realities of daily life for your clients, opening a window into their lives and enabling you to become a better advisor, advocate and litigator. It will also focus on how cases in our Civil, Criminal, and Family Courts are also affected by cross-border and foreign legal system and foreign laws and treaties including jurisdiction, comity to foreign judgments, securing service of process abroad, obtaining foreign witness testimony, immigrants and immigration issues, among others.

    Join Hon. Sohail Mohammed as he delves into these issues - and analyzes several case studies judges are routinely asked to decide and attorneys must be familiar with. Judges and attorneys will both benefit from this insightful program.

    Gain a new perspective on the key issues you need to consider, including:
    - Customs, culture and religious traditions and their impact on our courts
    - Marriage and divorce attitudes around the world, including types of marriage - dissolution and helpful resources to the judiciary and legal community
    - Overview of world legal systems and significant treaties and other agreements;
    - Cross-border issues involving jurisdiction, service of process
    - Analysis of several case studies judges are routinely asked to decide (family, civil, criminal)
    - Effective techniques and recommendations to enhance and address inter-cultural, religious sensitivities in proceedings and decision
    - Significant issues involving religion and prison systems (incarcerated persons)
    - Significant issues involving religion and land use
    Interpreters, translations issues
    ...and more!
