    Part 1: Writing to Win
    The Essentials of Writing for Trial and Appellate Advocates. No matter what level of experience you have or what area of practice you work in, as a lawyer you are constantly faced with the challenge of writing clear and concise documents. Understanding the law is one thing, but knowing how to communicate it in a meaningful way is another. Being unclear in communication can cause costly errors and disastrous effects in the cases you handle. Do you know what your written communications are really saying to your clients and peers? At this one day seminar, nationally renowned author and lecturer Steven D. Stark will provide you with the tools you need to successfully write in today's legal environment.

    You can expect to find out:
    • The do's and don'ts of legal prose
    • How to write and edit more efficiently
    • How to apply storytelling to your writing of statements of fact
    • How studying advertisements can help your arguments
    • Ethical issues relevant to legal writing - RPC1.1 (Competence); 1.3 (Diligence); 1.4 (Communication); 3.1 (Meritorious Claims and Contentions)

    Part 2: Speaking to Win
    Whether you are called upon to give an oral argument, legislative testimony, a presentation to clients, or comments to the press, you'll come to understand what makes a great speaker effective, and discover how to use those techniques yourself. This multi-media, multi-disciplinary program includes fun, practical, improvisational exercises - to be done in class and then at home - designed to improve your skills and conquer anxiety. Whether you're a trial lawyer or simply have to give the occasional presentation, you'll come away with concrete ideas you can implement immediately.

    You can expect to find out:
    • How to write a speech or testimony to get your message across
    • How to use humor to your advantage
    • How to respond to questions without hesitation, and improve your delivery
    • How to deal with a hostile or indifferent audience
    • Relevant ethical issues - RPCs 3.3 (Candor towards the Tribunal); 3.4 (Fairness to opposing party); 3.5 (Impartiality, and decorum of a trial); 4.1 (Truthfulness in statements to Other); 4.2 (Communication with persons represented by counsel.

    CLE Credits:
    NJ CLE information: This program has been approved by the Board on Continuing Legal Education of the Supreme Court of New Jersey for 8.0 hours of total CLE credit. Of these, 4.4 qualify as hours of credit for ethics/professionalism.
    NJ CLE: This program has been approved for 8.0 credits (50 minute hour), including 4.4 ethics/professionalism credits
    PA CLE: 3.0 substantive and 3.5 ethics credits pending ($28 fee – separate check payable to NJICLE must be submitted at the end of the program)
    NY CLE (t&nt): 3.5 professional practice and 4.0 ethics credits

    The general tuition is $299. Tuition onsite is $339.
