    Hello Family Law Section members,

I am reaching out to let you know about two upcoming CLE seminars that may be of interest to family lawyers. Both seminars will be held at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick.

Oct. 12 - Special Situations in Adoption
Oct. 14 - Family Law Certification Exam Prep Course

On Saturday, Oct. 12, NJICLE will present Special Situations in Adoption from 9 a.m. to 12:35 p.m.

While some adoptions are routine, an ever-increasing number take place under unique and sometimes challenging circumstances. For example, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, opioid drug overdoses killed more than 70,000 Americans in 2017, leaving an alarming number of children in need of legal guardians/parents. Similarly, with the immigration crisis reaching new heights, if children are in the United States and need the protection of a juvenile court because they have been abused, abandoned, or neglected by a parent, they may be eligible for Special Immigrant Juvenile (SIJ) classification/qualify for a green card – and may have special additional considerations when they proceed onward to adoption. These are just two of the many scenarios you may encounter. Make sure you're prepared when a special adoption situation emerges in a case you're handling. Register today to gain the footing you need to effectively advocate for your clients and the children in the middle of these challenging situations.
