Sister wanting to become joint custodian

    Hi, All,

I have a client who is an adult, active military, with three teenage siblings.  One of the children's father has never been in the picture and the other children's father is deceased.  Mother of all four was recently diagnosed as schizophrenic and bi-polar and my client would like to make sure that if her mother has another episode or is unable to care for the teen siblings, that she can take them.

At first I was thinking of a guardianship, but she is concerned that the military will not recognize them as her dependents (i.e. provide family housing) if they are not her legal dependents.

As of right now, mother is on meds and functioning, and, presumably is willing to consent to joint custody with my client.  That could change at any time if she goes off meds.

    Any suggestions?  Thanks in advance!
    Melanie
