  • 1.  Seeking pro bono counsel

    Friends,

I have a request from Partners for Women and Justice, a non-profit that assists low income domestic violence victims, for pro bono counsel on a custody matter.  The details and contact info from the staff attorney is pasted in below.  I am sure this organization has Madden approval and can satisfy pro bono obligations.  The case is in Mercer County.

I have a former client who we advised with regard to a restraining order against a short-term male roommate.   She ultimately did not get a final restraining order.  Here is where I need some assistance…  Client is and has been the primary caretaker of the roommate’s son.  The child is now 4.  Some time ago, both the roommate and the child’s mother signed a consent order giving Client sole custody of the child.  The parents both severely abused the child.  As a result the child is developmentally delayed, self-harms, has been diagnosed with PTSD, and has a host of other issues.  After supervised visitation with father, the child regresses and begins self-harming again.   Client has done an amazing job caring for the child and his special needs and the child has greatly improved in her care.

Client  is now is stuck in an ongoing legal struggle with father, who wants the child back.   I really feel that she needs an attorney to help her with these issues and other legal guardianship or adoption concerns.  She has limited funds and cannot afford private counsel.  We simply do not handle these types of cases at Partners. It is also beyond my expertise.

Just a plug that on April 7 at Harrah's in Atlantic City, we have a great panel discussing third-party custody litigation including grandparents visitation litigation.

Included on the panel are Hon. Charles Rand, formerly presiding judge of the Camden county family part, Brian Schwartz and Jeralyn Lawrence, former chairs of the NJSBA family law section, and Cheryl Connors, co-
author of the amicus brief in the recent Major v. Maguire grandparents visitation case.
    I will be moderating.

This program is part of the NJAJ Matrimonial Law Section program at the Boardwalk programs on April 7 and 8, 2016.
