Hello Immigration Law Section and Family Law Section members,

I am writing to tell you about an upcoming NJICLE seminar sponsored in cooperation with the Immigration Law Section, and of interest to family law practitioners as well.

Protecting Victims of Violence: How to Get Relief under the Immigration Laws
will be presented on Friday, Nov. 15 from 2 to 6 p.m. at the New Jersey Law Center.

U.S. law provides a variety of protections and benefits for immigrants who have been victims of crime.
Those crimes include domestic violence, human trafficking, and other crimes involving violence, at the hands of either foreign or domestic aggressors.

Often times, victims are unaware of such protections and are afraid to come forward. These laws provide special protection for those who assist in reporting or prosecuting those crimes. Those legal mechanisms include the Violence Against Women Act, which codified the U and T Visas, Asylum, and Petitions for Permanent Residence. This seminar will teach attorneys how to utilize these tools so they can provide their immigrant clients with the protection that they need.

    Program Topics:

    • Asylum, Withholding of Removal and Torture Convention for Victims of Violence
    • The U Visa for Victims of Qualified Criminal Activity
    • The Role of Law Enforcement Agencies in obtaining the U Visa
    • Petitions for Domestic Violence Victims to receive Permanent Residence:
    I-360s and I-751s

    Who should attend:
    • Immigration lawyers
    • State and Federal prosecutors
    • Attorneys interested in human rights cases, including but not limited to the protection of women and children

    Moderator/Speaker: Harlan York
Speakers: Valentine Brown, Maggie Dunsmuir and Alexia Schapira

NJ CLE information: This program has been approved by the Board on Continuing Legal Education of the Supreme Court of New Jersey for 4.5 hours of total CLE credit. Of these, 4.5 qualify as hours of credit toward certification in criminal trial law and matrimonial law.
