    Dear Family Law Section members,

NJICLE is offering two CLE seminars on Thursday, Dec. 20 at the New Jersey Law Center, on two important topics for attorneys: well being and its effect on professionalism and ethics; and time and e-mail management.

From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Productivity Bootcamp: Time and E-Mail Management will feature:
    Bill Jawitz
The founder of SuccessTrackESQ, Bill has been working exclusively with attorneys since 2002. He coaches attorneys how to run their practices more successfully and profitably while becoming happier practitioners in the process. A frequent CLE presenter who consistently receives high scores for content and style, Bill has conducted over 90 programs for numerous Bar Associations throughout the country, and is regularly engaged by law firms and corporate legal departments to guide them on wide-ranging practice management and client development initiatives.

Learn how to elevate your practice by spending more time on the right things and better managing the unrelenting flow of electronic communication. Learn, among other critical skills, how to prioritize, organize, delegate, and minimize interruptions so you can devote more time to serving clients and developing new ones – while being less stressed and more effective in the process. You will also learn specific strategies, tactics and tools that will help you get far greater control of your e-mail and texts.

    Program topics will include:
    • Take control of your schedule-including hourly and daily planning, effective calendaring and using do-not-disturb project time
    • Prioritize and delegate more effectively
    • Design case flow systems so you have prompt access to files, status, deadlines and benchmarks
    • Significantly reduce interruptions during your day
    • Organize your physical space and paper files
    • Organize e-mail and other electronic information, including how to use inbox subfolders and automatic rules properly, so you can avoid shoddy record keeping, missed deadlines, angry clients and possible malpractice issues

From 2 to 5:35 p.m., Lawyer Well Being and Its Effect on Professionalism and Ethics will feature:
    William John Kane, Esq.
Founder & Executive Director, New Jersey Lawyers Assistance Program, New Brunswick

Ours is a helping profession, but one that can challenge even the most competent of practitioners. The hours are long, the clients often difficult, and the workload is sometimes crushing. Those issues, coupled with pressures from personal obligations, can weaken a lawyer's wellness making him or her susceptible to depression, addiction, and other conditions. These conditions can undermine a lawyer's competency, skill and professionalism, and possibly expose an attorney to malpractice liability and disciplinary measures. At this informative program, three highly-regarded professionals from New Jersey's Lawyers Assistance Program (NJLAP) will discuss the importance of mental wellness in the practice of law, and will provide you with practical strategies to achieve balance in your personal and professional lives.

William John Kane, Esq., the Founder and Executive Director of the New Jersey Lawyers Assistance Program (NJLAP) will review how unaddressed problems can impact practices and subject attorneys to ethical and professional difficulties. He provides guidance about what to do if you think you, or a colleague, needs help. He discusses how attorneys can take care of themselves while they take care of others, so they practice ethically and competently.

Neuroscience presents new discoveries and theories about brain functioning. Ray Ortiz, Esq., a NJLAP Attorney Coordinator for 20 years, will describe some aspects of neuroscience addressing details how brain function can impact decision-making and conduct.

In addition, Noreen Braman, the Program Manager for the NJLAP, demonstrates how kindness and humor can enhance your sense of well being and have a positive impact on mental state and demeanor.

    Preliminary Agenda:
    • Identifying mental health issues and how they should be treated
    • Warning signs that an attorney may need help
    • The attorney discipline system in New Jersey
    • Concerns for practitioners dealing with mental health issues such as depression, substance abuse and other conditions
    • Applicable case law and forensic issues
    • Clinical concerns
    • Methods for coping and relieving stress and preventing depression and substance abuse
    • The role of the NJ Lawyers Assistance Program - what it does and how it can help attorneys who are experiencing difficulties
    • What neuroscience is discovering about well-being
    • Recent concepts of volition, human behavior and wellness
    • Affirmative (and even fun) steps to take to enhance your sense of well being and mental health
