    Dear Attorneys and Judges:

For all who are attending next week's NJSBA convention in Atlantic City, I would like  to call your attention  to a newly developed, first-time program entitled,  "Navigating Animal Law Issues in Family Court."  The panel presentation is  co-sponsored by the NJSBA's Family Law section, and Animal Law Section,  and is one of the leadoff programs of  the  State Bar  Convention (Wednesday, May 15, 2019, 9:30 a.m.).
The panel  will address key emerging  legal and social issues  including  (1) animal abuse issues in domestic violence/criminal proceedings, (2) pet ownership  during separation or divorce; (3) relevancy of pets in child custody disputes; (4) allocation of  costs of caring  for  a family pet following separation or divorce; (5)  alternative  dispute resolution and the pros and cons  of mediation  vs arbitration, and (6) emerging trends in sister states.

A working knowledge of this evolving area of the law will benefit  any and all professionals who  may presently or in the future address  pet-related issues in court or in mediation/arbitration.

I am pleased to have  helped create this special  program for the NJSBA , and to join  the panel of diverse speakers for this presentation, including (1) Monmouth County Superior Court Judge Angela White Dalton; (2) Michelle Newton, Esq., who co-chairs the NJSBA's Animal Law Committee and practices with Dennigan Cahill Smith in Princeton; (5) John DeBartolo, Esq., former Chair of the NJSBA Chair of the Family Law Section and  President of the Monmouth Bar Association, who practices with Atkinson & DeBartolo in Red Bank; (4) Dr. Nancy Halpern, Esq., of Fox Rothschild in Princeton, who chairs the firm's Animal Law Committee and who is both an attorney and a licensed veterinarian who previously served as NJ State Veterinarian, (5) Gina Calogero, Esq., a family law attorney in Oradell who is the past Chair of the Animal Law Committee; (6) Lauren Beaver, Esq., a matrimonial attorney with Ulrichsen Rosen & Freed in Pennington, and (8) Amanda Clark, Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor and former Assistant Counsel in the Office of Counsel to the Governor.
As May is National Pet Month in the United States, hopefully you will be able to join us at this special  program, which immediately precedes the 2019  keynote speech to the NJSBA by Bob Woodward.
