Join us as history unfolds before our eyes with this dynamic program about voting rights and holding political office in New Jersey - as told through the biographies of incredible Newark women. First, you'll hear directly from celebrated author Barbara Kukla, as she shares powerful excerpts from her acclaimed book: "Newark Women: From Suffragettes to the State House." You'll learn about some of the heroes in the fight for voting rights - some well-known, and some unsung, and how these lawyers, politicians, singers, business owners, and others all played unique and important roles in working to guarantee the right to vote and hold office for all people.

Next, you'll hear a roundtable discussion comprised of prominent lawyers and elected officials discuss the practical status of voting rights and running for office today. From basic considerations to high-level issues that need to be addressed, the panel will share their thoughts and firsthand experiences on a wide range of topics including recent events, the direction we're headed in New Jersey and the United States, and the challenges that are still very present for powerful women.

    Our roundtable includes:
    Lt. Governor Sheila Oliver
The first African American female statewide office holder
    Senator Diane Allen
Founder of runWOMENserve, a non-partisan PAC whose mission is to help boost the state's roster of female legislators
    Assemblywoman Yvonne Lopez
CEO of the Puerto Rican Association for Human Development, Inc. in Perth Amboy and founder of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Perth Amboy. A Perth Amboy native, she ran for assembly in order to expand her reach improving life for her constituents.
    Linda McDonald Carter
The Newark historian and lawyer with deep roots and a commitment to making change in one of our most storied cities.
    Flavio Komuves
Former chair of the NJSBA Election Law Special Committee

Are we where the suffragettes envisioned we would be in the 21st century? Are there more laws needed, or is fine-tuning required, in order to ensure that all communities are properly represented in local government and in the state legislature? Become part of the conversation as the panelists share some of the personal challenges they've faced (and continue to encounter) - and how their constituents or clients view their access to vote and their choices on the ballot. Make your plans to attend today.
