Henceforth, I have decreed that second spouses be referred to as mulligans. A mulligan is a second chance to perform an action, usually after the first chance went wrong through bad luck or a blunder. Its best-known meaning is in golf whereby a player is informally allowed to replay a stroke, even though this is against the formal rules of golf.

In Scotland they refer to "mulligans" as "lying three" meaning there is no such thing as a "mulligan" and your first stroke counts, plus you are penalized for hitting over and your next stroke is your third.  "Mulligan" is probsbly appropriate as we do it in my regular Saturday foursome, depending on the stage of the match and the $s at stake. Then again, given the fact that credibility issues continue to arise in Family matters, the word "lying"(whether it is "one" "two" or "three" )might ought to fit in here somewhere. I guess it depends on whose ox or pocketbook is being gored
