    Hello Family Law Section members,

From Monday, April 9 to Monday, May 7, NJICLE in cooperation with the Family Law Section and Justice Garibaldi ADR Inn of Court will present Mediation Training-Family Law Cases, a 5-Day (40 Hour) program, at the New Jersey Law Center.

The Supreme Court has amended Rule 1:40-5(3)(b) to expand the economic mediation program statewide. Each vicinage must have in place a post-Matrimonial Early Settlement Panel program for mediation of the economic aspects of divorce.

Those who have been trained in mediation skills and who meet other requirements set forth in the New Jersey Court Rules (Appendix 19), and are approved by the Joint Credentialing Committee of the Supreme Court CDR Committee and the Supreme Court Family Practice Committee, will be placed on a court-approved roster. After the first two pro bono hours on each case, court-approved mediators will be able to set market-rate fees for their services.

    Frequently Asked Questions:
What is required to become a court-approved mediator?
All persons serving as family law mediators are required to have successfully completed a minimum of 40 hours of classroom mediation skills training, with a minimum of 25 hours of that training to be completed before inclusion on the roster, and an additional 15 hours within one year after inclusion on the roster. They shall also be required to attend four hours of continuing education annually. Both attorney and non-attorney applicants need to have at least seven years of legal experience in the field of expertise.
What do I have to do to meet the training requirements?
In just 5 days at the New Jersey Law Center, you can complete the entire 40-hour requirement. A distinguished panel of highly experienced mediators will lead you through a series of lectures, demonstrations, exercises, and role plays. You'll gain the knowledge you need to effectively manage conflict, enhance your communication and negotiation skills, and learn strategies for dealing with the problems you are likely to encounter when mediating family law cases. You will also be required to attend four hours of continuing education annually.
    How do I register?
If you are planning to attend, please register as soon as possible. Only eighty registrants will be accepted for the 40-hour course. Once the maximum has been reached, no additional registrations will be accepted. To help make your learning experience more rewarding, the speakers have requested that in preparation for the program, you read the following item:
