  • 1.  Jointly Titled Annuity Severed by Civil Union Dissolution?

    Posted 05-05-2014 03:45 PM
    Hello all,

Two ladies owned an annuity purchased during the civil union.  Doesn't the civil union dissolution sever the joint ownership of the annuity such that each party can designate whoever they wish as beneficiary of their portion of the asset?  Or does it depend on the annuity contract?

Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

I think that because the two women made a contract with the annuity provider; you must resort to the contract for a resolution.  The insurance company will steadfastly refer to anyone attempting to collect to the terms of the contract.  A change cannot be made without all i's dotted and t's crossed with the annuity carrier.
