I realize we don't generally post these announcements here when one of us passes, but John was a giant in the field. When I clerked in Bergen 23 years ago, I used to save his letter briefs as he had a skill for breaking down complex legal concepts into easily understood arguments. A truly great legal talent. From all my interactions with him, he was a good and gentle soul who will be missed. May his memory be a blessing. If anyone knows of a charity he's asked for donations to, please share, on-list or off.

David - You are so right.  I clerked in Bergen 2006-2007.  I put in a call to his office and will get more details about charities tomorrow.

He was an absolute giant, brilliant and a man whose representations could be taken to the bank. In the 39 years I had cases with him we settled every one and had very little motion practice.

Judy and I sat with him at the MLA holiday party. I didn't know it would be the last time we would talk but i wont forget how much i enjoyed seeing him that evening. RIP John and have a celray soda on me (inside joke)

Please accept my apologies for my misstatement in my prior post. John's children were not adopted.

I clerked for Judge Krafte in Bergen 38 years ago and I too knew John as a giant (both physically and mentally) among matrimonial attorneys. In later years, we were adversaries and he certainly kept you on your toes,  always challenging you in ways that enhanced your own skills and knowledge. Although he was a formidable adversary, he was indeed a sweet and kind soul. We had a special connection as well in that  all  of our children, both his and mine, were adopted and we never tired of hearing about each other's children.

I had not seen him in many years, but luckily saw him last year at a function. He was as warm and engaging as ever.

    Rest in peace.
