Hello Family Law Section and Labor and Employment Law Section members,
The New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education (NJICLE) will host a
special national presentation of interest to all attorneys,
JFK and Justice - His Legacy in Law on
Wednesday, Nov. 13 at the
New Jersey Law Center.
On November 22, 1963, time stopped... or more correctly, it paused. As our nation mourned, it simultaneously moved forward. The "new generation" of Americans had already begun to respond to their call to duty. Attorneys inside and outside of government service were challenging laws and practices that had stood since the dawn of the republic. They still do so today. 50 years hence, we gather in a historic and dynamic new program to assess our progress. In this compelling 3-hour event we will compare the early 60s emergence from the chill of McCarthyism to today's cyber-hunts for un-American activity. The Kennedy Justice Department may have been a reluctant ally of the civil rights movement, but it spawned courageous attorneys like John Doar who stood with the movement during the Johnson administration. Indeed, the greatest legacy of the Kennedy years might well be the forces and energy that were unleashed by the emblematic character of the Kennedy campaign, nomination and presidency.
A star-studded panel of experts who were there and those who carry the mantle today will discuss in round-table format the evolution and future of the American legal system, the struggle for true and complete civil rights, and the relationship of the government to the governed, as they grew from the Kennedy presidency onward. The first question for our panel - and for you - is "how did the events surrounding the JFK years affect your life and the lives of your clients?" The next question is "what lessons did we learn from those years that all lawyers ought to take to heart and use in their practices?"
Michael Tigar, a legend in American law, will moderate and instigate discussion among a panel which will include Due Process host
Raymond Brown, Widener University's Professor of Law
Judith Ritter, and
Grant Wright. Expect lively and realistic coverage of unresolved issues that linger from the incubator of the early 60s. There will be reverence when appropriate, but questions where necessary.
NJ CLE information: This program has been approved by the Board on Continuing Legal Education of the Supreme Court of New Jersey for 3.3 hours of total CLE credit.
