  • 1.  GPS stalking detector?

    Posted 01-19-2017 04:28 PM
Client suspects her soon-to-be-ex has a GPS tracking device on her car. As we all know, these devices are very small these days. Is anyone aware whether there's a way to detect them? Do they put off a signal or something?

    Thanks,

I just had this in a DV. My client took her car service at the dealer & they found the device on her car. She never knew it was there. Take it to a dealer to check!

There is a device available; it is called a GPS bug detector and costs about $350.  It is probably sold at the same surveillance equipment store the soon-to-be ex purchased the GPS.

A good PI will have the ability and devices to detect.

During pending divorce, my client was driving with kids in the car and they heard an alarm sound.  Eventually pulled over and got out of the car and discovered the sound came from a phone that was taped to the undercarriage.  To this day, Husband denies that he put it there.  Case settled.

    Hi Dave,

I apologize for my delayed response- I hope it's still helpful.

The client should call her local police department and request they sweep the car for any detectable GPS tracking devices.  Typically the department will make an appointment for her to come into the station and offer the service free of charge.  She can also request they check her phone, as location apps are often downloaded there without clients' knowledge, which could be another way her soon-to-be-ex is tracking her.  If she receives any push back from the police department, please let me know as the Coalition would be interested in advocating for law enforcement to provide that service.

Also, if she would like a domestic violence advocate to safety plan with her, as stalking victims/survivors are often at higher safety risk, she can contact her local domestic violence agency.  I attached NJCEDV's Guide to Services which lists the contact information for local domestic violence agencies in all 21 counties.

Please let me know if I can offer additional support.

    Best,

    Deanna
