Good morning. I am completing a name change for a 19 year old young lady who also needs a court order recognizing a gender change and gender marker change on her social security administration.     Can someone lead me in the right direction to complete this for my client.  Any sample forms would be greatly appreciated.  Thank you in advance.

    Hi Doreen:

The Social Security Administration doesn't require a court order to change a gender marker-the person just needs to get what's called an "appropriate clinical treatment" letter from a doctor. A great resource for how to change gender markers on various federal documents is the ID documents center at transequality.org. For NJ ID documents, I'm pretty sure there's a blog about them on my firm's website argentinolaw.com.

Also, feel free to give my office a call if you have additional questions.
