Please don't use the listserve to send offensive jokes.

Actually, I thought it was funny. Can we use the listserve to send funny jokes? :)

I had two good laughs yesterday, expecially considering how serious this listserve generally is. Maybe the easiest way to circulate some fun on the listserv is to put in the title "Off Topic - Joke" and whoever doesn't want to read that can delete it, while the rest of us can enhance our cocktail party repertoire at our leisure.

I think Felice's idea is excellent.  It is important to remember that this listserv reaches a large number of people, all with different sensibilities.  Posting on Listserv is similar to being in or with a large group of people - some are strangers, some are friends but all are within earshot.  If you would not make a joke or comment in front of such a crowd, don't post it on Listserv.  Unfortunately, there was an attempt at humor a few months ago that offended a LARGE number of people.

On behalf of the 569 members of Welsh-American National Collective Attorneys Association of Central New Jersey, I must protest in the strongest possible terms the offensive attempt at humor posted to this list earlier today.  Most of our attorneys are Welsh, but only a few of us commit bestiality.  Okay, most of us.  But still, those who don't might be offended.  Please be guided accordingly.

But seriously - perhaps we should consider opening another forum, either as part of the Family Law Section or the general membership, where users can post an occasional joke, help wanted ad, vent, flame, etc.  I'm a member of a couple of list servs and this one is traditionally the stuffiest... maybe it's the subject matter?  I think this is the first joke I've ever seen posted here. A separate, less formal list would let those of us too busy to engage in such banter ignore the messages (or unsubscribe to it if so inclined) but at the same time give the opportunity for occasional irreverence and humor-break we all sometimes very much need while working in this sometimes impossibly high-stress area of the law.

An off topic listserve, such as the NJAJ has, is grest and you can ask non-family law related questions, talk about sports, tell jokes and post about political issues. ------------------------------ Robert Goldstein Esq. Manalapan NJ (732)972-1600 ------------------------------

Great idea re: an off topic listserv. Also can anyone recommend other listserves (beside njsb) worth joining for a solo practitioner who handles divorce & family law, general litigation, municipal court, and estate planning? ------------------------------ Amanda Jones Esq. It is possible for me to set up a "Member-Created Community" on any topic you like, and it works by invitation only. We could send invites to all section members, and it's up to them if they would like to join. This is something maybe you should run by your executive committee first.

    All the best,

The New Jersey Attorneys List is a great resource.  It has all manner of practitioners on it, including many family law attorneys who also are on this list.  There are also all manner of off topic discussions going on at any given time.  And, yes, we just put OT in the subject line so the reader knows when to ignore something.  Everyone on the list is very congenial.  I also send my listserve e-mails to specific folders in outlook so I am not constantly distracted.  I look at them when I have time.
