Subject: 3% Percent is Not Enough - Help Protect Our State's Natural Resources and Stop the Exxon/Christie Deal

    Dear Friends,

For almost the entire 20th century, the Exxon Mobil Corporation and its predecessors operated oil refineries in Linden and Bayonne. While operating these facilities, Exxon polluted and contaminated the area by spilling, leaking and improperly disposing crude oil and other hazardous material.

Because of Exxon's actions, New Jersey has lost more than 1,500 acres of wetlands, marshes, meadows, and waters in northern New Jersey. The state's own experts estimated that cleanup and restoration would cost $8.9 billion.

And just last year, after nearly a decade of litigation, and with Exxon's liability no longer in dispute, the State Attorney General went to trial seeking over $8 billion in damages.

That is until Chris Christie's Governor's Office intervened.

In March, the Christie administration announced that they had struck a deal with Exxon for only $225 million, which is merely 3% of what New Jersey needs to clean up the contaminated sites.

After learning of the atrocious deal cut with Exxon by the Christie administration, the State Senate passed a resolution asking the Judge in the case to reject the administration's $225 million settlement and provide New Jersey with the funds to clean up the contaminated land and protect our natural resources.

On Monday, the administration officially released the settlement. As part of the consent judgment all New Jersey residents have 60 days to comment and tell the state what they think of the agreement. In fact, in its editorial against the Christie Administration's secret deal, The New York Times <http: www.nytimes.com/2015/04/09/opinion/gov-christies-bad-deal-with-exxon.html=""> said that "now the public needs to get involved".<http: www.nytimes.com/2015/04/09/opinion/gov-christies-bad-deal-with-exxon.html="">

As a co-sponsor of the Senate resolution, I am asking for your help. Please send your comments to the New Jersey's Department of Environmental Protection at [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> - And make sure to reference the "Exxon Mobil Bayway Settlement<http: www.nj.gov/dep/nrr/settlements/index.html="">" in the subject line of the email.

Your voice may just help stop the Christie/Exxon deal and protect our state's natural resources.

    Sincerely,

    Senator Nia H. Gill</http:></mailto:[email protected]></http:></http:>
