I know I'm preaching to the choir and this topic has been discussed to death but I have to vent.

I am substituting in as the attorney for a pro se stepfather in his adoption action. Judge just appointed an attorney to represent bio father so stepfather wants me to appear with him at next month's hearing.

My assistant called the surrogate to find out whether they'd be charging me for filing an Appearance ($50) and a Substitution of Attorney ($35).  I only need to file the Sub of Atty [the good news] BUT I have to pay $110 because this is considered an answer or responsive pleading.  HUH?!??!  I am representing the plaintiff for crying out loud.   Ugh.

    Lisa:

Call Michelle Smith, the Clerk of Superior Court. She will set them straight that this is not an answer.

I was at the meeting with her on Monday night and she did encourage a call with any problems.

This happened to me as well. I came in for pro se in a divorce. Sought to file a Sub of Atty signed by client and me as new counsel - rejected they wanted Appearance at $15 more to file. Nonsense...
