Good morning Family Law Section members,
We hope this finds you well and working hard.
We write to share good news about some upcoming programming that will resonate with family law practitioners.
In just days, NJICLE proudly presents the inaugural NJICLE Winter Conference – a day of solid, important, hard-hitting topics that will give you the latest and most valuable information that you can immediately put to use in your practice. You can register for one price and choose programs in any track or ones that have been specially designed for New Jersey attorneys practicing in the pandemic. The tuition for NJSBA members is $188.
The NJICLE Winter Conference will be presented on Monday, Nov. 23 from 8:45 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
Several programs examine family law from managing the emotional side of divorce to an update on third-party issues, and more. The line-up of speakers features some of the most experienced New Jersey judges and lawyers who think about and work on family law matters every day.
Check out the family law track:
The day starts with:
Managing the Emotional Side of Divorce: Helping Your Clients Learn the Rules for Disengaging in High Conflict Divorces
Since most divorces involve people who are angry at each other, attorneys need to find a way to help their clients channel their emotions, and not stoke conflict. Good family lawyers help guide their clients to a place where they can emotionally disengage their former spouse so they can make rational decisions about their children, assets, and future. This seminar will teach attorneys how to help their clients navigate the rough waters of high-conflict divorces to reach an emotional safe harbor where they can make decisions about the rest of their lives. The conversation will feature: Albertina Webb, the Hon. Thomas Zampino, PJFP (Ret.), Erik Dranoff, Ph.D., Sandra C. Fava, Esq., and Elizabeth Colon Davidson, LCSW, LCADC.
Next up is:
Remarriage and Blended Families
While many assume that remarriage is simpler because clients have "been through it all before," blending families and unraveling different philosophies toward finances and child-rearing are seldom straightforward. As an attorney, you must prepare your remarrying clients for the challenges that lay ahead with family dynamics and financial issues, so they don't implode and threaten the subsequent marriage's viability. Join, Steven B. Sacharow, Amanda Trigg, Tanya Freeman, Sharon Ryan Montgomery, Psy.D., and Donald J. DeGrazia, CPA, ABV, CFF, for a chance to explore the issues and get practical guidance.
The day also includes:
Third Party Issues in Family Law – 2021 Update
When interviewed about her divorce from Prince Charles, Princess Diana famously said, “There were three people in this marriage so, you see, it was a bit crowded.” Of course, she was referring to Camilla Parker Bowles but a third party isn’t only a spouse’s lover. A third-party can be grandparents, step-parents, closely held corporations or any other entity that affects the outcome of a family law case. This seasoned panel features: Sheryl Seiden, Bruce Evan Chase, Robert Epstein, Derek M. Freed, Stephanie Frangos Hagan, NJSBA First Vice President Jeralyn L. Lawrence and Elissa A. Perkins.
After drilling in on your specialty in the morning, conference attendees can take advantage of even more programming that will help your practice.
Attendees can also pick from one of the day's General Sessions and spend the afternoon in seminars about civil litigation, law practice management and ethics, including:
Live from the Pandemic Task Force – The Latest Guidance on Handling Law Firm Reopening, Remote Working and More
The New Jersey State Bar Association Pandemic Task Force Committee on Law Firm Opening and Operations released a collection of interactive reports to provide firms of all sizes with practical guidance as they begin the process of reopening law offices and returning employees to work.
Your Data Is At Risk: Easy-to-Implement Cybersecurity and Data Privacy For Attorneys, Firms, and Families
It may seem counterintuitive, but cybersecurity isn't solely an IT problem – it's actually a responsibility that everyone in your workplace shares. This fast-paced, fun, and easy to follow session is specifically designed for attorneys, support staff, and other legal professionals in non-technical positions to gain an understanding of the biggest threats they're facing, as well as simple strategies you can put to work immediately to protect yourself and an action plan for a more cyber resilient organization.
The day concludes with a spectacular ethics program. Recent Developments in Professional Responsibility and Ethics is presented in cooperation with the NJSBA Professional Responsibility Committee and includes a discussion of ethics in a pandemic, candor to the tribunal, the duty to protect electronically stored information, the amendment to RPC 7.5 (e ) concerning law firm names, retainer agreements under Balducci, and more.
