Hello Family Law Section members,
On Tuesday and Wednesday,
Dec. 17 and 18, NJICLE will present
Economic Mediation with Domestic Violence Final Restraining Orders: A 2-Day Training from
9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the
Wilshire Grand, West Orange. Before 2015, Court Rules and the Domestic Violence Procedures Manuel barred divorcing parties from participating in economic mediation if there was a FRO in place. If the couple could not settle, they had to try their cases, often at great personal expense. In 2015, the Supreme Court launched a pilot program in 6 counties, which trained economic mediators on how to handle cases involving domestic violence, so that economic mediation could be an option for these couples.
That program is now expanding to all 21 New Jersey counties.
This Course Is Required For All Approved Mediators Seeing To Mediate Dissolution Cases Involving DVIf you are an approved mediator, already on the judiciary roster of family economic mediators, and you want to mediate dissolution cases involving DV, you must take this two-day course. Upon completion, the Court will add your name to the list of mediators approved to handle FRO cases, and you may accept referrals and court appointments pursuant to the program guidelines. The program will teach you how to conduct mediations where there is a final restraining order in place, and will sensitize you to the dynamics of domestic violence. You will also see important demonstrations of mediation sessions with survivors and perpetrators. Finally, as an attendee, you will also have an opportunity to participate in simulation exercises.
