  • 1.  "Credible" Investigator sought

    Posted 09-10-2015 04:24 PM

Over the course of years, I am sure that we have all seen good and bad private investigators. Unfortunately, over the past few years, I have seen too many bad investigators and therefore am a little gun shy on recommending an investigator. That said, I was just asked for a recommendation for an investigator for surveillance type work in the North / Central Jersey area.

Candidly, I strongly suggested to this person that she find a better use for her money  than paying an investigator to engage in surveillance type conduct, but for whatever reason, she feels its necessary and I am open to recommendations to pass on.  Somehow finding out that he was listed on the AshleyMadison.com, Match.com and Adultfriendfinder.com sites were  not enough for her.

    Thank you.

Be sure that you need a PI.

They're usually good at what they do and worth the cost - asset searches, in-depth surveillance, where he/she will have to interact with the person, etc.

I've had matters where, for example, someone was claiming to be unemployed. You can use anyone to follow someone and take photos - there's no legal requirement that she/he be a licensed PI. Hired someone for $12 / hr to follow the person and take some pictures of the guy working. In another, the person was running a business and "PI" gave a check for a purchase, which we then traced to discover an undisclosed account in a third party's name. Both cases settled before plenary, but there's no reason he couldn't have testified as to what he saw, taking the photos, issuing the check - as well as how much he was paid, etc. In neither case could client have afforded the full cost of a PI.
