Consolidating GP and FD actions

I represent Dad in an FD action.
His parents have been very involved in raising his 12 year old son, with the child having a bedroom at both houses, grandparents involved with the school, etc.
Mom has "some issues", including dating felons (one a convicted killer), runs around with gang members, lives in terrible areas by choice, etc.

There's now a conflict between Dad and mom (details irrelevant) and we need to file an application with the court.
His parents are retaining separate counsel to file a GP rights action.

I think the best way forward would be to file to consolidate the cases. Same proofs, and Dad and his parents very much on the same page.

    Has anyone done this?
Does the fact that my client (Dad) will have to be a defendant in the GP action present a problem with consolidating it?
