A couple can lose crucial pensions and benefits that they had before they tied the knot.
Having fought so hard for marriage equality, it is a little disconcerting to know that same sex couples, now facing the same consequences as heterosexual couples, may have very good reasons NOT to marry. That is what equality really means.
