This situation arises endlessly. It is extremely fact/judge/credibility sensitive. Often, it is entirely credible for parents, who are more than eager to help their child and his or her spouse while in tact, to cut off continued financial support following estrangement. Why wouldn't they?
Regularity and uniformity of "support," age and employability of the parties and a virtually non-exhaustive list of factors can come into play. This often happens when grandparents want their grandkids to be enrolled in parochial school, but the parents cannot afford it or have other financial priorities. If the support is of a bridging nature, Hughes may provide a helpful analogy.
Good luck. Cases like this are best settled.

Brown v. Brown, 348, N.J. Super. 466 (App. Div. 2002); cert. denied :
...James "had the financial ability to pay the attorney fees, reasonable Bar Mitzvah costs; camp and temple expenses from his income and/or from his mother who paid the camp and temple costs prior to the parties' marital problems." FN4
FN4. We recognize that James's mother had no obligation to continue those gifts. However, after James testified that his mother continued to advance those expenses, but did so as loans rather than as gifts, the judge disbelieved James's claim that he was indebted to his mother to repay those amounts.

Colleagues:
Does anyone know of a case discussing the impact on alimony awards of support by the parents during the marriage other than Weishaus v. Weishaus?
