    Hello Family Law Section members,

On Saturday, March 17, NJICLE will present Anatomy of a Case Information Statement from 9 a.m. to 12:35 p.m. at the New Jersey Law Center.

The Case Information Statement (CIS), is the most important document in a divorce proceeding, as it details the incomes, assets, and liabilities of the parties. Completing the form requires an in-depth analysis of the client's financial picture - something your clients may not have themselves. It can be an arduous task, but you must guide your clients through it, since the CIS is used in negotiations, ADR forums, and litigation, to determine the parties' financial status.

The importance of the CIS should never be underestimated, and since the CIS is considered a pleading, it's completion should never be delegated to anyone other than an attorney. It may look like another form, but successful family lawyers think strategically when completing the CIS because they know that the document's preparation is certain to impact the client's financial position with respect to alimony, child support, and equitable distribution.
