The Daily Record published four op-eds this weekend that should be of interest on Assembly Bill A-3909, which would legislate the (unofficial) formula for alimony. They were written by Judge Zampino (supporting),
Sandy Durst (opposing), Brian Schwartz (opposing) and
Yours Truly (supporting).
We should all be involved in this debate. I won't repeat the contents of the op-ed here, but I maintain that those opposed to it (especially on the grounds that it is a world-shaking revolutionary change) haven't read the bill. It primarily serves to recognize that Crews is a naked emperor, legitimatize the formula and provide sufficient guidance to the bench and bar to remove the arbitrariness of current alimony awards. It specifically does NOT remove judicial discretion to modify awards when the facts justify it.
