The New Jersey State Bar Association’s governing body took key actions to support its members and advance the organization’s mission during its July meeting.
The Board approved new leadership for the Federal Practice and Procedure Section and authorized efforts to revitalize the Section after a period of inactivity. Former NJSBA Trustee Joseph Linares has volunteered to lead the Section, whose mission is to monitor, study and comment on developments affecting the federal courts while promoting educational programs and activities that enhance attorneys' understanding of federal practice and procedure.
The Board supported the following legislation pending in the state Legislature:
A5310 Pintor Marin/ S4406 McKnight – a bill that clarifies sentencing under certain circumstances.
A2215 Speight – a measure that increases the resource threshold limit for certain Medicaid eligibility groups.
S4107 Ruiz/ A5110 Speight – a bill that prohibits the seller providing service or selling goods from charging surcharge to customers using debit card or gift card.
S1618 Amato/ A1848 Myhre – a bill that clarifies child support obligation notice and certification requirements for applicants for state licenses.
A4830 Quijano/ S2234 Ruiz – a measure that establishes the Office of New Americans within the state Department of Human Services.
A1215 Scharfenberger/ S4479 Holzapfel – a bill that expands the crime of human trafficking to include individuals who benefit financially.
A4224 Murphy/ S2836 McKnight – a measure that establishes a guardianship monitoring program in the Office of Public Guardian for Elderly Adults.
