The New Jersey State Bar Association’s governing body took key actions to support its members and advance the organization’s mission during its November meeting.
The Board supported submitting additional comments opposing the Court’s budget proposal to raise the annual attorney registration fee by $27, bringing it to $294. If approved, the increase would fund additional staffing at the Disciplinary Oversight Committee tied to establishing the Attorney Regulatory Board, as well as rising costs at the Board of Bar Examiners driven by inflation and testing expenses. The NJSBA previously expressed concerns in 2023 and 2024 that raising the attorney registration fee could negatively impact lawyers.
The Board approved renaming the revamped Senior Lawyers Committee as the Leadership and Experience Council. As part of the rebrand, the council will adopt a new mission focused on offering resources and a forum for seasoned and mid-career lawyers to explore new directions – whether moving from public service to private practice, winding down a firm or planning for full or partial retirement. The council will also offer mentorship, networking and practical programs on business development and career planning to help newer lawyers gain perspective and guidance as they chart their own paths.
The Board supported the following legislation pending in the state Legislature:
S4603 Scutari – a bill that establishes requirements to develop protocols and training for reunification therapy.
A5835 Fantasia – a bill that requires law enforcement officers to undergo training on their responsibilities as mandated reporters of incidents of child abuse and neglect.
A4976 Moen/S3895 McKnight – a bill that establishes the crime of reckless discharge of firearm.
A4346 Scharfenberger/S886 Bucco – a measure that establishes child support lien against life insurance proceeds and requires insurers to perform child support judgment searches.
