In September, the NJSBA’s governing body met to address membership, dues, bylaws, pending legislation and other issues facing the Association.

The Board approved a dues waiver for members in a recently created membership category for law school graduates who are not yet admitted to the bar. Membership in this group will be free, following the same dues structure for law students and first-year lawyers, and may be held for up to three years. The Board also voted to waive dues for former emeritus members who no longer practice full time. Earlier this year, the Association eliminated the emeritus membership category and created a special membership group for retired attorneys who wish to remain active.

The Board amended the Public Utility Law Section’s bylaws to permit its annual meeting and officer elections to coincide with the NJSBA Annual Meeting, but no later than May 31. The change aligns with the Association’s policy requiring section elections before June 1.

The Board also voted to enter an agreement with la Concha Resort in Puerto Rico for the 2027 Family Law Section Retreat.

The Board supported the following bill, as amended, pending in the state Legislature:

S4510 Lagana/ A5761 Carter – a measure that clarifies procedures in certain contested child custody cases.
