Managing Healthy Family and Work Relationships with Less Stress | NJSBA Member Assistance Program Provides Strategies, Insights

Dozens of NJSBA members took part in a recent workshop on how to decrease stress in work and family relationships. It was a free lunchtime webinar from the Association’s Member Assistance Program.

The session looked at characteristics of healthy relationships, including positive and consistent communication, mutual respect, resiliency, reliability, empathy, inclusivity, and trust.

Family relationships foster stability, mental health and confidence in going out into the world and help you develop relationships in the workplace and further a sense of confidence and trust in others going forward, said Shaunta Clark, a senior counselor at Charles Nechtem Associates.

“When we feel trusted, appreciated and safe we can feel confidence in going into the world and our working relationships maintain and grow on top of that foundation,” she said.

Gaining an understanding of yourself, using mindful communication and seeking resolution in relationship conflicts are critical to fostering healthy relationships, whether at home or the office. Conflicts are inevitable and don’t always have to be roadblocks, and can even foster growth.

A few simple strategies to consider in managing relationships are:

·                     Be clear about what your needs and wants are.

·                     Try mindful listening and speaking.

·                     Ask for what you need clearly.

·                     Find a trusted person who can help keep you grounded and stay on track.

·                     Try to come to a resolution that is respectful to all involved, whether it is to compromise or even agreeing to disagree.

·                     Share positive feelings often.

The Member Assistance Program connects members—and anyone else in their household—to trained, experienced mental health professionals and resources. NJSBA Members and individuals in their household are eligible for three in-person counseling sessions, per issue, and unlimited text, phone and email support. All communications are confidential.

The program is provided through industry leader Charles Nechtem Associates and provides 24/7 access to a mental health professional with at least seven years of experience. The professional will counsel callers and help them find resources. If needed, they will help people find an accessible clinician who is accepting patients, and every effort will be made to make clinical referrals to counselors who are covered by your medical insurance plan. If that is not possible, efforts will be made to connect people with a practitioner who can provide services on a sliding scale.

Members also have access to an extensive Wellness Library with 25,000 interactive resources to help resolve personal problems or improve your personal and professional lives.
