NJSBA PracticeHQ Provided PDF Power Hour for Members

Love ‘em or hate ‘em, PDFs are a reality of life in the legal world.

The NJSBA recently held a free lunchtime learning webinar that covered everything the legal profession needs to know about PDFs. The hour-long program was filled with practical information about making, converting, exporting and all-things PDF. The interactive webinar drew over 100 members whose questions, which started in the first moments of the session and continued throughout the presentation, were answered in real time.

Here are some tips and insights from the seminar:

  • Many electronic files, digital images, paper documents, emails and webpages can be easily turned into a PDF.
  • There are a few main types of PDFs: digital native, which is text searchable; image only, which is the default that scanners create; and searchable, which is indispensable for law firms; type A, which is for archival purposes and is popular for court filings.
  • Tools can be used to read them out loud; search and replace; add page numbers and watermarks; and compare two different PDFs.
  • Editing features can be helpful to add text, copy images, and add security.
  • The key to successful redactions is to use the redaction tool, rather than draw black boxes with the comment tools.

A recording of the presentation and the materials shared about PDFs will be available in the PracticeHQ hub at njsba.com in the coming days.
