The New Jersey State Bar Association is seeking volunteer attorneys for an Aug. 1 event at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick to coach high school students for a mock trial competition through NJ LEEP (Law and Education Empowerment Project).
NJ LEEP empowers urban youth from underserved neighborhoods in the greater Newark area to perform at high academic levels by building skills through law-related and college access programs. The organization is dedicated to increasing diversity in the legal profession by exposing youth from historically underrepresented and marginalized groups to legal study and skill building at a young age.
Students in NJ LEEP’s Summer Law Institute are rising ninth-graders who attend a five-week course of criminal law and criminal trial process that culminates with a mock trial competition. On Aug. 1, the NJSBA will host a Career and Coaching day for the students, which includes career conversations and coaching sessions with the mock trial teams. Attorney volunteers on Aug. 1 will work with teams on witness preparation and honing their legal arguments.
Volunteers will be needed from 10:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday Aug. 1 and must attend in-person. For more information, or to volunteer, email Paula Saha, NJSBA Senior Managing Director of Diversity, Inclusion and Member Engagement, at
[email protected].
This project is cosponsored by the New Jersey State Bar Foundation and made possible through funding from the IOLTA Fund of the Bar of New Jersey.
