The Hon. Beverley McLachlin, former Chief Justice of Canada, will offer an intimate look into her life in a special program the New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education (NJICLE) is hosting this month.

Justice McLachlin, who led the Supreme Court of Canada from 2000 to 2017, broke ground in becoming the first female chief justice in Canadian history. In a webinar, the jurist will discuss her rise through the courts and the most consequential cases of her career, a story detailed in her new book “Truth Be Told: My Journey Through Life and the Law.”

The June 29 event is co-sponsored by the NJSBA Women in the Profession Section. Following Justice McLachlin’s remarks, a roundtable including former New Jersey Supreme Court Justices Jaynee LaVecchia and Virginia A. Longwill parse through key issues from the book and offer their own insights into similar cases, obstacles and lessons attorneys can learn from. NJSBA President Jeralyn L. Lawrence will moderate the discussion.

Justice McLachlin, 78, carries a reputation as one of the finest legal minds to ever sit on Canada’s high court, according to Judicature, a publication of Duke Law School. From a modest childhood in the Alberta foothills, she entered a career in law and rapidly distinguished herself as a judge of who was never afraid to take on morally complex or charged debates.

Throughout her career she presided over the most prominent cases in the country, including Charter challenges, same-sex marriage and euthanasia, rulings that shaped the social and moral fabric of the country.
