Addressing attorney burnout in the age of COVID

After more than a year of living and working in a global pandemic, many of us have experienced burnout, exhaustion and strains on our mental health.

Numerous studies have shown that well-being has suffered under COVID-19. A recent Harvard Business Review survey underscored that reality, reporting that 89% of those surveyed said their well-being related to work has declined; many are struggling to handle their work and balance it with other responsibilities; and others are experiencing more exhaustion and are losing connections with other people.

The New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA) recognizes the unique challenge lawyers face and wants to help them emerge from the pandemic with the tools to be more resilient and productive.

As part of national Well-Being in the Law Week, the NJSBA Lawyer Well-Being Committee and New Jersey Lawyers Assistance Program (NJLAP) will present a free, interactive and thought-provoking virtual session on May 5, titled “Becoming Your Own Best Advocate: Addressing Attorney Burnout in the Age of COVID.”

Lauren Baptiste, chief empowerment officer at Acheloa Wellness, will lead the program. A former accountant at a Big Four accounting firm, she launched her wellness company after experiencing burnout firsthand. Baptiste will help participants broaden their understanding of self-care and provide practical tips to support well-being during this challenging time.

The NJSBA and NJLAP will share additional information, videos, articles and seminars throughout the week of May 3-7 to help foster well-being in all aspects of life, including physical, spiritual, social and emotional areas.
