The New Jersey State Bar Association is thankful for its members who volunteer their time throughout the year with the singular mission of improving the profession. As we close the door on 2020, some members shared their resolutions for the year ahead.
I welcomed a daughter into the world at Thanksgiving, so I am resolving to be the best mom I can be in 2021. And I also resolve to give myself some grace when I feel like I have fallen short. I hope my daughter resolves to sleep through the night!
Emily S. Kelchen–Chair, Young Lawyers Division and NJSBA Trustee
My resolution for my practice in 2021 is to increase my client communication. With case progress slowing because of the pandemic, there can be an inclination to inform and update clients less, simply because there is less progress to report. You have to overcome that inclination and reach out, even if the news is that there is no news. Clients are usually very understanding and just happy that you reached out.
Joshua S. Kincannon–Chair, Product Liability and Mass Tort Section
Fewer hours in the office!
Albertina Webb–Member, Family Law Section
More New Jersey State Bar Association CLE!
John L. Shahdanian II–NJSBA Trustee
My resolution is to eat healthier and get more exercise! This year has reminded us all that health is wealth, and a lot of lawyers work long, stressful hours. We have to remember to take care of ourselves, drink lots of water, eat lots of vegetables and other healthy food, and get as much exercise as we can between briefs and court hearings.
Mark R. Friedman–Chair, Elder and Disability Law Section
For the Municipal Court Practice Section I hope the municipal courts and those within them resolve to reimagine themselves, remember the optics and importance of their transparency, persevere safely through the remaining challenges caused in 2020, and always remain committed to equality, fairness and justice. Personally, I resolve to endeavor to heal as many of the personal and professional injuries and injustices suffered or caused by 2020 as I can.
Michael A. Hoffman–Chair, Municipal Court Practice Section
For 2021 to be less taxing than 2020!
Michael D. Benak–Chair, Taxation Law Section
I am looking forward to a safer 2021 and seeing more of my family, friends and colleagues!
David Edelberg–Chair, Bankruptcy Law Section
At our firm, we resolve to now work even harder to preserve the rights of those who do not necessarily have a “vote” but do have a stake in our way of life (here in the U.S.). We all agree that we will work even harder to combat discrimination (in all forms) and to protect vulnerable populations as well as the employers and citizens in the U.S. who will also work with us to promote and implement this mission.
David H. Nachman–Member, Immigration Law Section
Wishing all of our local government officials the strength to make the tough decisions and the wisdom to do what is right. Together we can overcome any obstacles! Best to all in 2021!
Kenneth A. Porro–Chair, Local Government Law Section
