Hunger is a constant for 1.2 million New Jerseyans every day—and the problem is getting worse because of the pandemic and high unemployment. The Thanksgiving holiday puts hunger into stark focus, but you can help by donating to the New Jersey State Bar Association's Lawyers Feeding New Jersey (LFNJ) campaign.
LFNJ works with the Community FoodBank of New Jersey (CFBNJ), where every dollar donated provides three meals to people in need.
Even before the pandemic, demand for charitable food assistance in New Jersey exceeded food banks’ supply by 155 million meals, the CFBNJ said. While the pandemic has greatly increased demand across the country, it has hit New Jersey particularly hard.
In the year ahead, CFBNJ anticipates about $14.5 million in additional costs, which could rise higher as demand and expenses continue to grow.
“COVID-19, and its impact on food insecurity, will not leave any part of the state unscathed. Every county, city and town throughout New Jersey will experience greater hardship as a result of the pandemic,” according to a CFBNJ report.
