Chief Justice Stuart Rabner and Acting Administrative Director of the Courts Judge Glenn A. Grant expressed gratitude to the state’s lawyers for the critical role they are playing in ensuring access to justice in these unprecedented times.

In a letter to NJSBA President Evelyn Padin this week, the Judiciary leaders praised attorneys who have been working zealously to assist clients in an ever-changing world.

The letter also provided assurances that the New Jersey courts would continue to provide essential services during the COVID-19 public health crisis.

The letter goes on to enumerate steps the Judiciary has taken to meet requirements of social distancing. The courts have eliminated nearly all in-person proceedings in this time, apart from certain emergent matters. Video and phone conferencing options are being used for court hearings, arguments, conferences and other matters.

“We appreciate the many ways in which attorneys have supported our transition from personal appearances to remote proceedings,” the letter stated.

Rabner and Grant further stated that in a society based on the rule of law, whose residents and businesses are confronting countless legal issues, attorneys are needed now more than ever.

“We appreciate your commitment now, as always,” they said.
