The Labor and Employment Law Section (LAELS) of the New Jersey State Bar Association is now soliciting nominations for the 2020 Sidney H. Lehmann Award.

In 2013, the LAELS voted unanimously to establish the Sidney H. Lehmann Award of the Labor & Employment Law Section of the New Jersey State Bar Association, in memory of our friend and colleague, Sid Lehmann. Sid made an indelible mark on public sector labor relations in New Jersey and possessed a passion for social justice and a belief in the value of every person. He began his career at Camden Legal Services and then became one of the original lawyers in the New Jersey Office of the Public Advocate when the agency was created. He became the General Counsel of the New Jersey Public Employment Relations Commission in the Commission’s early years and argued many significant cases before the New Jersey Supreme Court and Appellate Division which remain the law today. In private practice, Sid represented his clients zealously and passionately whether they were unions representing university professors, State employees, supervisory police officers, or board of education custodians. Sid, in his person and practice, exemplified each of the values recognized in this award, and his memory serves as a model for us going forward.

The Sidney H. Lehmann Award is a non-monetary award which is given annually to a member of the Labor and Employment Law Section. The recipient should be an individual who embodies the values of integrity, scholarship, professionalism, dedication, collegiality, and bridging the gaps between labor and management, the plaintiff’s and defense bars. The 2019-2020 Award Committee, appointed by LAELS Chair Ian Meklinsky, will select the award recipient from the nominations submitted by members of the Section in this open nomination process. The Committee is comprised of Steven Cohen, Chair, Maureen Binetti, Lisa Manshel, James McGovern and Paul Kleinbaum.

The award will be announced and presented to the recipient at the Annual Meeting of the Section in May at the NJSBA Annual Meeting and Convention.

All current members of the LAELS are eligible to make a nomination, and all current members are eligible to receive the award. The deadline for submitting a nomination is February 14, 2020. Nominations should be submitted via email to Steven Cohen at [email protected] or regular mail c/o Selikoff & Cohen, P.A., 700 East Gate Drive, Mount Laurel, NJ 08054-3823. With each nomination, please include any information that you believe will help the Committee evaluate the nominee's qualifications. We suggest as a courtesy to all nominees that you keep any nomination you make confidential.

In discharging its responsibilities, the Award Committee depends upon the energetic and thoughtful participation of our Section's membership in the nomination process. We very much look forward to your contributions in this seventh year of the Sidney H. Lehmann Award.
