The New Jersey State Bar Association is launching Law Days throughout New Jersey as an initiative of NJSBA President Evelyn Padin in partnership with affinity and county bar associations, the Judiciary and legal services organizations. We are looking for attorneys who are willing to volunteer for these events to provide assistance in the following areas of law: Immigration, Guardianship for Children, Landlord-Tenant, Divorce, Domestic Violence Restraining Orders, Criminal Law/Expungements and Criminal Law/Victim’s Rights. For those of you who are not bilingual, we will have interpreters available, so please do not hesitate to volunteer.
There will be tables set up with the area of practice indicated on each table and chairs for each volunteer attorney to answer one-on-one questions from the residents. We expect to have volunteers to shepherd people to the attorneys and to monitor the amount of time spent with each person. We suggest a limit of about 5-10 minutes with each person to answer basic questions. Many of the attorney volunteers bring business cards, as many attendees will follow-up after the program.
The first of these events is Oct. 26, 12-2 p.m. in Passaic County as a part of the Immigration and Citizenship Organization’s Immigrants Integration Day. The event will be held at Passaic City Hall. We also plan to have an event in January in Elizabeth and in March in Camden.
If you are available for the Oct. 26 program, please email us at [email protected] and indicate what legal topic you can cover. We will need a larger number of attorneys who can address immigration questions, in addition to the other subject areas, so please feel free to share this information with anyone you know who may be interested in participating.
