Jason Scott Camilo is like a lot of lawyers who feel there just aren’t enough hours in the day. But that doesn’t stop him from handling pro bono cases.

“Nobody has time. You just stick it in there,” he said of adding volunteer cases to his workload. “But it’s very rewarding.”

Camilo is the featured guest on the latest edition of the NJSBA Sidebar podcast.

Tune in to learn more about why the child of Cuban immigrants, Camilo has long been a strong believer in immigrant rights. He also talked about working for many years on a pro bono basis with organizations like Kids in Need of Defense (KIND) and the American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey. This fall he received recognition for his pro bono work from the New Jersey State Bar Association.

Camilo shares insights into two cases, one involving an Afghan man who risked his life and became a target of the Taliban after he helped American troops in his home country and another where a young girl was seeking asylum after being forced into prostitution by her grandmother starting at the age of 8.

He also explains why New Jersey is one of the best places for lawyers to start doing pro bono work and why he keeps taking free cases.
