A looming deadline: NJICLE offers multiple ways to meet your MCLE requirement by 12/31

The New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education—the educational arm of the New Jersey State Bar Association—has numerous opportunities available in this last week of 2017 for meeting mandatory continuing legal education (MCLE) requirements, including both live sessions and on-demand options.

All attorneys with a license to practice in New Jersey are required to satisfy a MCLE requirement of 24 hours over a two-year period. The exact deadline varies according to compliance group, which is determined by one’s birthdate and, for newer attorneys, the year admitted to practice. Of the 24 required credits, at least four must be in ethics and/or professionalism. The deadline for compliance group 1 is Dec. 31. New attorneys may have varying requirements. This week’s live opportunities, featuring nationally renowned speakers, include:

Movie Magic: How the Masters Try Cases: This seminar, to be held Tuesday, Dec. 26 at the Law Center in New Brunswick, is a daylong look at what the movies can teach trial lawyers about strategy and persuasion in motions, opening statements, direct and cross examination and closing arguments. Attendees will watch Hollywood portrayals of legal figures and learn about litigation techniques and ethical issues. Speaking will be nationally known CLE provider Steven O. Rosen of Oregon. This seminar will also be webcast.

Revisiting Younger’s 10 Commandments: This daylong seminar will be held twice this week—Dec. 27 in Morristown and Dec. 28 in Mount Laurel. Professor Irving Younger is known by a generation of lawyers for his “10 Commandments of Cross-Examination.” In this session, Stephen D. Easton, award-winning trial lawyer and teacher, will bring a contemporary spin to Younger’s commandments. He will incorporate video clips from Younger’s original presentation as he leads attendees in an exploration of the philosophy, psychology and physiology of credibility.

Speaking and Writing to Win: This daylong seminar will also be held twice this week—Dec. 27 in Mount Laurel and Dec. 28 in East Rutherford. Steven D. Stark, a writer, lawyer and consultant whose work has been featured by CNN, National Public Radio, Voice of America, The New York Times, the Los Angeles Times, the Atlantic Monthly and more, will share techniques for improving verbal and written communication skills that will help lawyers win their cases.

Thinking Inside the Box: This session, to be held Dec. 29 at the New Jersey Law Center in New Brunswick, will feature a practical tip-packed multi-media program by Steve Easton. The day will cover building relationships with jurors and judges, and rules for trial attorneys. This seminar will also be webcast.

Legal Ethics is no Laughing Matter…or is it?: This half-day seminar will be held three times—Dec. 29 in Mount Laurel, Dec. 30 in New Brunswick and Dec. 31 in West Orange It features Sean Carter, a Harvard Law School graduate who spent 10 years in legal practice and now tours the country giving professional educational seminars as a “humorist-at-law.” He has also written a syndicated legal humor column. This program will satisfy all of the ethics/professional credits for New Jersey and New York attorneys. The Dec. 30 seminar will be webcast.
