How Long Does My Obligation to a Former Client Last

Good morning listmates,

As you all know, I represent banks and credit unions.  I had a most unceremonious firing by one of my old bank clients quite a while ago.  One bank rep in particular was very difficult.  Well, "what goes around comes around".  The bank is now being audited by a Federal agency for compliance on a very old closed file which I closed over 8 years ago!  The difficult bank rep now needs my help.

Now the bank rep is asking me for materials in my file from over 8  years ago.   Please bear in mind that I always send the client copies of everything that crosses my desk so they should have retained the materials and they should already have copies (if they had retained what I had sent them).

How long does my obligation to my former client last?  When can I finally tell this (very needy) client that I am no longer representing them, I do not want to waste any more of my personal time on their closed files, and to get lost?  Or do I need to continue to service their own failure to retain the documents that I had sent them over the years.

Thanks for your opinions.
Alan
