The New Jersey State Bar Association stands in solidarity with Ukraine and recognizes that the ongoing war has created a humanitarian crisis for Ukrainian citizens both at home and abroad. For attorneys interested in offering legal aid to Ukrainian nationals living in the U.S., the NJSBA will host a webinar on April 22 on how to help those from the war-torn country apply for Temporary Protected Status. The special training session, presented by the NJSBA Immigration Law Section, will cover the history of TPS, who is eligible, how to apply and more. In an effort to help the thousands of Afghan evacuees who are sheltered at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, also known as Fort Dix, in Burlington County, the New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA) Immigration Law Section is hosting a drive to supply clothing and other much-needed items. The unauthorized practice of immigration law, more commonly known as notario fraud, is the subject of the New Jersey State Bar Foundation’s (NJSBF) latest publication, Avoiding Notario Fraud in New Jersey . The New Jersey State Bar Association (NJSBA) is urging action be taken over apparent lapses in federal and state COVID safety protocols at the Peter Rodino Federal Building in Newark that jeopardize the health and safety of visitors. In a Feb. 19 letter to the director of the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS), which has its Newark field office at the building, NJSBA President Kimberly A. Lizbeth Mateo, an immigration attorney in Los Angeles who is undocumented, will speak at a New Jersey Institute for Continuing Legal Education (NJICLE) seminar titled “The Undocumented Lawyer: An Insider’s Perspective to Immigration, Asylum and Civil Rights” on Jan. 27. Mateo is the subject of a forthcoming HBO documentary, “The Undocumented Lawyer,” which will be shown at the seminar.
